{"id":155606,"date":"2026-02-10T12:23:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T10:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/?p=155606"},"modified":"2026-02-10T12:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T10:23:10","slug":"this-is-how-tintinnabuli-was-born-50-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/en\/this-is-how-tintinnabuli-was-born-50-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"This Is How Tintinnabuli Was Born 50 Years Ago"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">According to composer <b>Arvo P\u00e4rt<\/b>\u2019s spouse <b>Nora P\u00e4rt<\/b>, it was exactly 50 years ago on the morning of Saturday, 7 February when her husband\u2014who was going through an artistically uncertain phase\u2014sat down at the piano and, almost by accident, composed a modest-sounding piano piece titled <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wXTIzaKqOUw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cF\u00fcr Alina\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span>. The piece became the first representative of P\u00e4rt\u2019s distinctive musical language of expression, later named tintinnabuli.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wXTIzaKqOUw\"><span class=\"s1\"><br><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The tintinnabuli technique, characterised by an aesthetic of reduction and silence, has thus for half a century been the source of the inexhaustible creativity of P\u00e4rt, who turned 90 last autumn. According to statistics from the music site <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/bachtrack.com\/classical-music-statistics-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">Bachtrack<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Arvo P\u00e4rt rose again in 2025 to become the world\u2019s most performed living classical composer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Thirty kilometres west of Tallinn in Laulasmaa, the composer\u2019s current home region, lies the architecturally enchanting Arvo P\u00e4rt Centre with its concert and exhibition halls, libraries, observation towers, and caf\u00e9s. According to <b>Kristina K\u00f5rver<\/b>, a musicologist and pedagogue working at the centre, P\u00e4rt has expanded the understanding of tonal and modal music in the field of music, thereby strongly influencing other creators of contemporary music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cFor P\u00e4rt, as he himself has said, the most important thing is that tintinnabuli has become a linguistic means of communication, through which he can express his worldview, his relationship with religious themes, and his search for beauty and truth,\u201d K\u00f5rver explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">But who was Alina? She was the 18-year old daughter of <b>Irena Veisait\u0117<\/b>, a close friend of the P\u00e4rt family, and a Lithuanian theatre scholar who had also lived for a while in the P\u00e4rts\u2019 city apartment in Tallinn. Irena lost her daughter beyond the Iron Curtain when, due to internal family conflict, Alina moved with her father from the then Soviet Union to England. Of Jewish descent, Irena had already lost her mother earlier during the turmoil of the Second World War and the Holocaust, and was therefore devastated with grief. Arvo P\u00e4rt dedicated his work as a gesture of comfort, using it to convey the eternal love and connection between mother and daughter on the one hand, and between his own family and Irena on the other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Next summer, the Arvo P\u00e4rt Centre will open a special exhibition dedicated to the theme.
