Winter in Estonia is a veritable wonderland. Snow-capped pine forests, frozen bogs, cross-country and downhill skiing\u2026where should you even start, if you want to do it all?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with some professional winter sports events that you can watch, or if you\u2019re in amazing shape, even compete in. 14\u201315 February will see the world-famous Tartu Marathon<\/span><\/a><\/span>, which isn\u2019t actually in Tartu, but in nearby Otep\u00e4\u00e4. Also in Otep\u00e4\u00e4 will be the BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup Stage<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 12\u201315 March.<\/p>\n

Cross-country skiing is a staple sport in Estonia. While you\u2019re free to go into the wild and ski where you want, there are several established cross-country ski tracks<\/span><\/a><\/span> throughout Estonia. Some of the most popular are in N\u00f5mme, in Tallinn, the Tehvandi ski track in Otep\u00e4\u00e4 of course, and perhaps the most unique and family-friendly ski track is the T\u00e4htvere Sports Park in Tartu. While you exercise on a well-groomed track, your kids are sled down the various hills inside the track, so they won\u2019t wander away unsupervised.<\/p>\n

Downhill skiing is surprisingly very popular in a country that is known for being rather flat. The advantage is that the slopes in Estonia aren\u2019t nearly as crowded as Alpine resorts, making it easier and friendlier for youngsters and beginners learning the sport. Popular downhill ski locales are Kuutsem\u00e4e near Otep\u00e4\u00e4, and the Kivi\u00f5li Adventure Centre in Ida-Viru County. Another smaller yet popular slope is in N\u00f5mme, Tallinn.<\/p>\n

While indoor ice-skating is possible year-round in a few locations in Estonia, outdoor ice rinks are where the real fun is. Did you know there\u2019s a public ice rink in Tallinn\u2019s Old Town? There\u2019s also one on Tartu\u2019s Town Hall Square until 1 March. Then of course there\u2019s the popular Pirita Sports Centre, as well as a few other smaller rinks throughout the city. And if you\u2019re in Viljandi, don\u2019t forget to try skating on the lake!<\/p>\n

A particularly interesting winter activity is in Soomaa National Park<\/span><\/a><\/span>, where you can rent a kick sled and ice shoes to explore the frozen bogs. It\u2019s just over an hour\u2019s drive from Tallinn.<\/p>\n
