{"id":154456,"date":"2026-01-09T01:25:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T23:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/?p=154456"},"modified":"2026-01-08T11:27:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T09:27:35","slug":"finnish-estonian-art-at-the-007-manor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/en\/finnish-estonian-art-at-the-007-manor\/","title":{"rendered":"Finnish\u2013Estonian Art at the 007 Manor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The exhibition of works by painter <b>Raija Meril\u00e4<\/b>, who moved from Finland to Estonia ten years ago, has recently opened for the first time in L\u00e4\u00e4ne-Viru County at J\u00e4neda Manor, located 70 km from Tallinn. Among the approximately 50 works on display are, alongside traditional oil paintings, creative solutions that demonstrate the productivity of the artist even in her retirement years. Some of the works are created solely with a palette knife, while others feature added three-dimensional effects achieved through acrylic and plaster base layers as well as decorative sand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">At the \u201cFigurative Paintings\u201d <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hashtag\/raijameril%25C3%25A4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">exhibition<\/span><\/a><\/span>, visitors can explore the artist\u2019s perspectives on the human body and figures, space, and mythological elves and elf maidens. The larger oil paintings are displayed in the main hall on the first floor of the manor, in the lobby corridor on the second floor, while the smaller works are exhibited on the walls of the J\u00e4neda Library located in the same premises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">J\u00e4neda Manor, and therefore the exhibition as well, is open to the public without the need to book a guided tour, in accordance with the library\u2019s opening hours: during the winter season on weekdays from Monday to Thursday, 10:00\u201318:00.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/janedaturism.ee\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J\u00e4neda Manor<\/a><\/span> and its current main building, which even features castle-like elements, is one of the newest\u2014if not the very newest\u2014examples of Estonia\u2019s Baltic-German heritage. It was built in 1913\u20131915 by <b>Johann von Benckendorff<\/b>, and after his death his wife went on to live an adventurous life\u2014by chance, by choice, or perhaps unwillingly\u2014becoming the lover of such literary legends as <b>Maxim Gorky<\/b> and <b>H. G. Wells<\/b>. And that is not all\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The widowed lady also had connections with a figure involved in British foreign policy and espionage, even becoming indirectly entangled in an assassination attempt on Lenin. The literary father of James Bond, <b>Ian Fleming<\/b>, is known to have drawn inspiration from these events and to have used them when creating the character of the world\u2019s most famous agent. For groups interested in art and Estonia\u2019s own <b>Mata Hari<\/b>, it is therefore worth inquiring about a meeting with the local guide <b>Enno Must<\/b>, who can often guide visitors even on weekends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Raija Meril\u00e4\u2019s art exhibition is on display at J\u00e4neda Manor until 30 May.
