{"id":153732,"date":"2025-12-13T01:39:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T23:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/?p=153732"},"modified":"2025-12-12T14:44:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T12:44:11","slug":"two-estonian-museums-nominated-as-europes-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/en\/two-estonian-museums-nominated-as-europes-best\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Estonian Museums Nominated as Europe\u2019s Best"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">According to the recently announced list of finalists, the <a href=\"https:\/\/muuseum.tartu.ee\/en\/tartu-linnamuuseum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Tartu City Museum<\/span><\/span><\/a> and the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/linnamuuseum.ee\/en\/childrens-museum-miiamilla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">MiiaMilla Children\u2019s Museum<\/span><\/a><\/span> in Tallinn have been nominated for the 2026 European Museum of the Year Award. A total of 35 museums from different countries are competing for the recognition administered by the European Museum Forum under the Council of Europe. The winner will be announced in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Tartu City Museum has been nominated with its permanent exhibition \u201cOur Tartu\u201d, which will remain on display to the public until the end of 2027. The exhibition tells stories of city residents, and vividly presents the character of Tartu\u2019s different districts through 17 themed corners or rooms. In 2024, the exhibition earned the museum the title of Best Museum in Estonia as well as the Community\u2019s Friend award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cBeing nominated is above all recognition for Tartu and our citizens,\u201d says <b>Risto Lehiste<\/b>, Director of the Tartu City Museum. \u201cEven more important, in my view, is that we will be able to attend the final event in person, and present our work to other European museums. We will bring with us the thoughts, messages, and dreams that the people of Tartu shared with us for the exhibition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The permanent exhibition of the MiiaMilla Children\u2019s Museum, located in Tallinn\u2019s Kadriorg Park, consists of museum objects and more than 100 toys, donated rocking horses, and other items that visitors are allowed to touch and play with. The museum\u2019s themed rooms also include objects designed with children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe Children\u2019s Museum is built to listen to children\u2019s ideas. We have created a world where adults are encouraged to slow down to a child\u2019s pace and be truly present on their terms,\u201d explains the museum\u2019s director, <b>Jane Meremaa-Roos<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The European Museum of the Year Awards have been presented since 1977. Estonia and Finland have each received the main award once. In 2008, the winner was the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn, and last year it was awarded to the S\u00e1mi Museum Siida in Inari, Finland. In the subcategories, Tallinn\u2019s Kalamaja Museum received a community engagement recognition last year.
