It was 1980, and his father, conductor <b>Neeme J\u00e4rvi<\/b>, felt he could no longer make music in Soviet Estonia. Neeme and his wife, <b>Liilian J\u00e4rvi<\/b>, decided to move to the United States. The entire family\u2014Kristjan and his older siblings, <b>Paavo J\u00e4rvi<\/b> (now an acclaimed conductor) and <b>Maarika J\u00e4rvi<\/b> (who became a professional flutist)\u2014set out for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">That same January, Neeme J\u00e4rvi\u2019s close friend, composer <b>Arvo P\u00e4rt<\/b>, had already said farewell to the stifling atmosphere of Soviet Estonia. It took nearly three decades before these two great Estonian masters returned home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe moved from Tallinn to the countryside near New York, in New Jersey, where we lived for several years. When I was sixteen, my mother suggested we move to the city. At first I resisted because I liked rural life. But the pulse of New York soon pulled me in,\u201d Kristjan recalls with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Life as a teenager in a big city included plenty of parties alongside school. I had become completely detached from nature and from anything authentic. Everything changed when I met my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">He now lives with his wife, violinist <b>Hanna-Liis Nahkur<\/b>, and their young daughter both in Tallinn and in V\u00e4\u00e4na-J\u00f5esuu, half an hour from the capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cToday, even Tallinn feels a bit too large. In the countryside, by the sea, I feel most like myself. There, simplicity, lightness, and creativity go hand in hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">At the same time, Kristjan has undergone a deep personal transformation. He has lived alcohol-free for several years. About five years ago, he took part in ceremonies of \u201cthe wisdom of the land\u201d, which helped him cleanse old energies and reconnect with himself and with nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThat experience opened my senses. I understood the strength and vitality of our own ancestral wisdom and the primal spirit of our people. Today, he prefers the countryside to the bustle of the city.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">I don\u2019t really have an orchestra\u2014I have a band!<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Kristjan J\u00e4rvi has become known internationally for his distinctive conducting style, his music, and his boundary-breaking projects that combine classical and electronic music as well as improvisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cConductors are like analogue DJs who play someone else\u2019s music. Some do it subtly, some brilliantly. Then there are conductors like <b>Leonard Bernstein<\/b> or <b>Martin Garrix<\/b> who perform their own music. I belong more to that group. Then it\u2019s no longer about conducting\u2014it\u2019s about live creation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2017, Kristjan began leading an orchestra in a new way. In concerts, works are performed from memory, standing, and moving. Lighting design was added, and the sound was shaped so the experience became electroacoustic rather than purely acoustic. The orchestra began playing sets as if it were a band\u2014something never before seen in classical concert halls. This gave rise to Nordic Pulse, which is not really an orchestra but a living organism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe create everything together. The \u201cwisdom of the land\u201d, or <i>maatarkus<\/i>, is a kind of global tribe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cEvery Nordic Pulse concert is like a gateway into another world\u2014onto a frequency I call Nordic Amazonia. In that world live <b>Brian Eno<\/b>, <b>Jon Hopkins<\/b>, Coldplay, nublu, NO\u00cbP, <b>Eicca Toppinen<\/b>, and Nordic Pulse. Sibelius and P\u00e4rt belong to this tribe as well. This tribe has no flag or borders\u2014what binds it is a shared frequency. With my work, I want to awaken that tribal feeling\u2014not only for Estonia, but universally,\u201d Kristjan explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">There is something of both the explorer and the mystic in him. He seems more drawn toward the unknown than the ordinary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cMost people don\u2019t want to be singled out. I, on the other hand, look forward to it. I accept all criticism because I believe in myself. When a person believes in themselves, nothing can shake them. And if I get to shine, that nourishes others, too. This applies to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A concert should be a pleasure, not an obligation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Kristjan recalls a saying attributed to Giacomo Puccini: \u201cIf you don\u2019t fall in love with the piece in the first 13 seconds, then what are you even doing at the concert?\u201d He laughs, and his laughter is contagious\u2014warm and bright, both urban and primal. The concert takes the audience on a ritual musical journey based on Hopkins\u2019s album \u201cRitual\u201d. \u201cWe take the DNA of Hopkins\u2019s album and reshape it.
