{"id":147653,"date":"2025-06-13T01:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-12T22:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/?p=147653"},"modified":"2025-06-04T09:13:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T06:13:01","slug":"midsummer-bonfires-in-southern-estonia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balticguide.ee\/en\/midsummer-bonfires-in-southern-estonia\/","title":{"rendered":"Midsummer Bonfires in Southern Estonia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">As in all Nordic countries, Midsummer\u2019s Eve, or St John\u2019s Day Eve\u2014jaanip\u00e4ev, in Estonian\u2014is more popular than Christmas. Bonfires, grilled food, sauna, hiking, swimming, responsible drinking followed by jumping over or through said bonfires are staples of the Estonian experience for a proper Midsummer\u2019s celebration. This is a list of some of the larger local bonfires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Kambja, about 15 minutes south of Tartu will have a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/kambja-jaanituli?event=148279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 20 June. There will be a mini-zoo, pony rides, a trampoline, games, and other activities and refreshments. The live band will be Teine Mees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Kambja rural municipality will have a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/kambja-valla-jaanipidu?event=147255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> the next day, on 21 June, at the Estonian Agricultural Museum. Traditional games will be available, as well as refreshments, and even workshops. Live music by <b>Karl-Erik Taukar<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The N\u00f5o rural municipality will have a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/noo-valla-jaanipaev-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 20 June with a slackline performance by <b>Tauri Vahesaar<\/b>, and a concert by <b>Ivo Linna<\/b> and the band Supernova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Elva rural municipality will have a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/elva-ule-valla-jaanipidu?event=146014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 20 June with the bands Justament, and Recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The village of Elva itself has its <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/elva-jaanipidu?event=139837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 21 June. Kurjad Plaanid, Respekt, <b>Anne Loho<\/b>, Beatrice, and Mohiito will all be performing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Tammistu, a bit northeast of Tartu, will have a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/tammistu-jaanituli?event=134908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 21 June with the band Detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Tartu rural municipality will have their <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/tartu-valla-jaanituli-2?event=138768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 22 June in Vasula, about 20 minutes north of Tartu. Singer Vinger will be the musical guest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The city of Tartu itself will have its <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/tartu-jaanipaev?event=150997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on the actual Midsummer\u2019s Eve, 23 June, in Raadi Park, in the northern part of town. Handicrafts, workshops, singing and dancing games, and special musical guest: Curly Strings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Near the shores of Lake Peipus is a village called Koosa on 22 June. They will hold a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/peipsiaare-valla-jaanituli?event=139924\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> event with Meie Mees, and again Ivo Linna &amp; Supernova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Kastre rural municipality will have a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/kastre-valla-jaanituli?event=137776\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> on 23 June in Kurepalu with the band Wiiralt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Luunja\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/luunja-jaaniohtu-2025?event=149904\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> will be on 23 June, and will feature live DJ music and the band Fix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">R\u00e4pina\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kultuuriaken.tartu.ee\/et\/syndmus\/rapina-jaanipidu-0?event=149936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">bonfire<\/span><\/a><\/span> will also be on 23 June, and feature Straadiraadio, <b>Nele-Liis Vaiksoo<\/b>, and <b>Uku Suviste<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Similar bonfires will be held throughout the country. If you have a specific place in mind that is not on this list, you could just search for it plus the Estonian word \u201cjaanituli\u201d. If you have gone through this entire list, you\u2019ll notice that while the official party day is 23 June, several places have their bonfires a day or even two earlier. This is because it is tradition to have live music, but all the popular acts are booked, so the bonfires often have to be scheduled to fit the performers\u2019 schedules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Have a wonderful Midsummer\u2019s, and remember to drink responsibly.
