The Estonian Nature Conservation Fund (Loodushoiu Fond, in Estonian), has launched the sale of digital flowers to draw attention to the carbon footprint of imported flowers from abroad. According to a recent British survey, the carbon footprint of imported flowers is about ten times larger than that of locally grown flowers.<\/p>\n

According to Pille Ligi<\/strong>, a member of the board of the Nature Conservation Fund, they do not want to be extreme or say that an environmentally conscious person should not give flowers at all. “However, it is worthwhile to prefer domestic flowers when thinking about the environment, because, as recent British research shows, the footprint of imported flowers is about ten times larger than that of locally grown flowers.” <\/span><\/p>\n

Digital flowers and local wildflowers can be a suitable and greener alternative. The first is especially useful to show a loved one far away that you are thinking of them. The second, a more local and greener gift than imported flowers.<\/p>\n

In addition, the Estonian Nature Conservation Fund will use the revenue generated from the sale of digital flowers to increase biodiversity in the country. For example, working with landowners to bring more life to roadsides.<\/p>\n
