This year’s international piano festival KLAVER will focus on female pianistsOlga Kern

The popular annual international piano festival KLAVER will take place from October 23 to 27 at the Estonia Concert Hall in Tallinn. This year, the festival will shine a spotlight on female pianists.

One of the headline performers will be Olga Kern, a distinguished American pianist renowned for her emotive performances and technical prowess. Kern gained international acclaim in 2001 when she became the first female winner of the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Her concert, accompanied by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Neeme Järvi, will feature works by Rachmaninoff and Dvořák.

Another highlight of the festival will be Elena Bashkirova, a pianist known for her emotionally charged performances and exceptional technique. On October 23, she will perform a programme that includes Dvořák’s “Poetické nálady,” selections from Mozart, and pieces by the composer Fanny Hensel. Bashkirova is also known for her significant contributions to chamber music, having founded the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival.

Local artist Kirke Karja will also perform at the festival. Kirke is well-regarded as an innovative pianist and composer, whose performances reflect her multifaceted artistic vision. Karja, a prominent figure in the contemporary jazz scene, will present a programme on October 24, that features works by various composers, including her own original pieces. Notably, she will incorporate Paul Hindemith’s “Ludus Tonalis” into her performance, highlighting her creative approach to classical music.

These are only a few examples of the performances that will take place. Throughout the festival, engaging pre-concert discussions will also take place, that will offer interesting insights into the music and themes presented.

You can learn more about the festival and the full programme of performances from Eesti Kontsert’s official website.
