As of Tuesday November 23, the speed limits on major roads and highways in Estonia will be reduced from 110km/h to 100 or 90 km/h for the winter period. This change in speed limits is valid on 2+1 and 2+2 roads. It is important to point out that should the winter weather be better and warmer than expected, the authorities may raise the limits back to 110km/h.
These speed limits are advisory, not mandatory. Therefore, no speeding tickets or such penalties will be handed out to drivers on the roads mentioned who are travelling below the 110km/h national speed limit. These measures are to advise road users to act with caution, and choose their speed more in relation to the winter conditions than the speed limit of the road.
Although these speed limits are advisory, all cars must be fitted with studded winter tires before December 1.
