Coastal Folk Festival 2026 in Viimsi

Just up the coast from Tallinn is a place called Viimsi. If you drive through Pirita and keep going, you’ll find it. Viimsi is a unique town in Estonia, and it is even relatively famous internationally for its local Selver grocery store, because inside this shop is a massive boulder. The architects and designers thought it easier to build around the rock, than to remove it. This gigantic stone however has nothing to do with the Coastal Folk Festival happening nearby on 11 July.

The Coastal Folk Festival is a day-long, family-friendly celebration of all things Viimsi, except for the boulder. Go instead to the Viimsi Open-Air Museum, a charming coastal farm complex dating back a hundred and fifty years. The structures at the museum offer a glimpse into what Estonian life was like in the past, and there’s even a large, wooden village swing. Not to mention Lighthouse Alley, right by the water. These lighthouses are small models of the real things, and if you manage to find the correct angle for a photo, the lighthouse will look full-sized because of the smaller rocks along the seaside, if you compare the size to the boulder in the grocery store.

The Viimsi Farmers Market will begin at 10:00 that Saturday morning, as well as the Coastal Folk Fair, and the children’s area. Of particular interest is the “pop-up library”, which will also be open at the same time as the market and fair. Feel free to check out a book, but as the library closes at 17:00, you’ll either need to read very quickly, or ask someone where you can later return the book. One of the books in the selection will undoubtedly offer a detailed history of local rocks and boulders, possibly even including the one in the grocery store.

The Coastal Folk Festival itself officially begins at 13:00, and will include two bands, one of which will play for an extended time later in the afternoon so visitors can dance to the music. The music style will be more like folk, and not rock. There will also be guided tours. Naturally, there will be food available, and many other fun activities.

The precise schedule for the day is available here, and images of various large boulders—including the one in the grocery store!—are available here.
