An Unexpected Collection
The Museum of Icon Art offers a wonderful tour for both the novice and expert admirer.
Knowing nothing about icon art, this museum truly offered a fascinating look into the style. The collection at the museum is by no means small and can compete with even the biggest private and European collections. The exhibition features over 300 Russian icons dating from the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
What’s particularly fascinating is the wide selection of written works, like manuscripts and religious engravings by Old Believers. By seeing both Old Believers and Russian Orthodox icons side by side, it’s quite easy to see the differences. You will also learn about local masters, like Frolov and Myznikov, as well as look at the works of icon painters like Peshekhonov who painted for the Tsar’s Palace. Many church utensils are on display like old rite cast copper, religious gravures, and books.
The Museum of Icon Art is open by booking only. You can call or email to book your tour: +372 6410057 or info@ikoonimuuseum.ee. An adult ticket costs €12 or a family ticket (2 adults + 2 kids) costs €25.
